We are heading off to the stunningly beautiful Garfagnana area of Tuscany in October for some late summer sun and fabulous trekking in the Alpi Apuane and Apennine mountain ranges. We are staying in a beautiful Agritourismo (farm stay) close to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, about an hour or so from Lucca and Pisa. We are accommodated on the farm in 2-3 bedroom, twin-roomed/double room villas with great facilities; all of our food and lounging about will be in a large communal area that is just a stones throw away from the pool!
At the end of May/beginning of June, we undertook a recce of not only walks in the area, but also all of the accommodation at Braccicorti, as well as a visit by train to Lucca (for those who would like a cultural day – its well worth the visit to the famous walled city!). Michelle and I have visited Braccicorti several times for trekking holidays and a wedding, so we are quite familiar with the area and set-up; however, since our last visit, the family have created several self-contained villas dotted around the farm, each with 2 or 3 either twin or double bedrooms, each has en-suite facilities as well as space for lounging about and cooking (not that we will be cooking – although a brew first thing is rather pleasant!). We will all have exclusive use of a spacious communal area with dining table, pool table, sofa’s, arm chairs etc; with patio doors leading onto a veranda with far reaching views across the valley; behind this area is the ‘black pool’, with plenty of loungers and space to relax in full sun or shade. There will be an honesty bar; however, all 3-course evening meals will be served with wine from Braccicorti’s own vineyard – rather tasty too! We will have at least one dinner out at a local restaurant; and throughout our stay we will be transported about in a minibus – no doubt stopping at a bar after each walk to start the relaxing process!
